You will need

  • Sun and moon picture cards
  • Two hand puppets
  • Greeting song (Good morning to you)
  • Mirror

Warm up (5 minutes)

Sit in a circle and sing the greeting song. Wave to each child by name and invite them to wave back.

Main activities (20 to 25 minutes)

  1. 1Show the sun rising card and model "Good morning" with a smile and eye contact. Children repeat together, then one by one.
  2. 2Use the puppets to act out greetings at different times of day. Ask: is the sun up or is the moon out?
  3. 3Teach the same greeting in the local language used by the class, and say both side by side.
  4. 4Pair children to greet each other, then swap partners when the drum beats.
  5. 5Play "Who's at the door?": one child knocks and the class greets them for the time of day on the card.

Closing circle (5 minutes)

Hold up a sun or moon card and the class calls out the matching greeting. Praise every child who greeted a friend today.

Extra support

Accept a wave or smile first, then model the words softly beside the child.

Stretch

Add "How are you?" and "I am fine, thank you" to the greeting.
